Best Time to Catch Tailor
Tailor are fast, aggressive predators often found around beaches, headlands, breakwalls and bait schools. They are known for chopping baitfish and hitting metal lures, pilchards and surface presentations.
Seasonal patterns
Tailor often become more active in cooler months in many parts of Australia, although local patterns vary. Beaches with gutters, headlands with wash, and river mouths with bait movement are all worth checking.
Best conditions
Low light is important. Dawn, dusk and night sessions are traditional tailor times, especially around a tide change. Clean but not crystal-clear water, moderate swell and visible bait can all improve the odds.
Methods
Pilchards on gang hooks, metal slices, stickbaits and poppers are common choices. If tailor are present, fast retrieves and repeated casts through bait schools can produce quick action.
