How Wind Direction Affects Fishing
Wind direction changes water clarity, surface chop, casting comfort and where bait collects. It can make one side of a lake, river or bay difficult while another side fishes well.
Shelter and safety
Strong onshore wind can create dirty water and uncomfortable conditions, but it can also push bait into certain beaches and shorelines. Offshore wind may flatten the surf but can also make some land-based spots clearer and more cautious.
Water clarity
In estuaries, wind can push warm surface water and bait toward one bank or bay. In lakes, windward edges sometimes hold more food, while sheltered edges may be easier to fish accurately.
Bait movement
Use wind direction with local knowledge. A bad wind for one spot can be perfect for another nearby location.
